Two-Row Wampum Belt

Description:

Two rows of purple beads signifying the parallel journeys of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquios) canoe alongside a European ship.  The three rows of white beads signify peace and friendship.  According to the Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign, "The Two Row Wampum belt is the symbolic record of the first agreement between Europeans and American Indian Nations on Turtle Island/North America. [The year] 2013 marks the 400th anniversary of this first covenant, which forms the basis for the covenant chain of all subsequent treaty relationships made by the Haudenosaunee and other Native Nations with settler governments on this continent. The agreement outlines a mutual, three-part commitment to friendship, peace between peoples, and living in parallel forever (as long as the grass is green, as long as the rivers flow downhill and as long as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west). Throughout the years, the Haudenosaunee have sought to honor this mutual vision and have increasingly emphasized that ecological stewardship is a fundamental prerequisite for this continuing friendship. Here are links to some documents with more detailed background information."

Collected at the Montréal Anarchist Bookfair. "The Montréal Anarchist Bookfair organizing collective acknowledges that we are on the traditional territory of the Kanien'kehá:ka. The Kanien'kehá:ka are the keepers of the Eastern Door of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. The island called "Montréal" is known as Tiotia:ke in the language of the Kanien'kehá:ka, and it has historically been a meeting place for other Indigenous nations, including the Algonquin peoples. The Anarchist Bookfair collective believes it's not enough just to acknowledge the keepers of this land. We encourage everyone participating in the Bookfair to get informed and educated, and to actively resist colonialism and neo-colonialism in the many forms it takes, and in the diversity of forms that resistance can take, too." -- Montréal Anarchist Bookfair website
