This sticker was created by REEK, a Scottish fragrance company. According to the brand’s website, “REEK Perfume memorializes heroic, unapologetic women through scent. Our perfumes are an everyday rebellion, a reminder of female achievement, much of which has been forgotten. It’s time to take a stand.”
Since 1983, receiving an abortion in Ireland, including both the Republic and Northern Ireland, is illegal unless the pregnancy threatens the mental or physical health of the mother. For the Republic of Ireland, the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution is a piece of legislature that equates the right to life of an unborn fetus with the right to life of the mother, making abortion unlawful. A referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment is scheduled for May 2018.
Damn Rebel Bitches is REEK’s first fragrance. Repealing the Eighth Amendment in Ireland is just one of many “rebellious” causes that REEK supports. The company promotes gender equality and uplifting women by mailing free stickers like this one to anyone who orders them.
This sticker was peeled off one of the many ringbuoys placed by Irish Water Safety along the River Corrib walk, close to the Salmon Weir Bridge.
